“Tinubu Wants to Frighten Governors Who May Not Support Him in 2027” – Amaechi on Emergency Rule in Rivers

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State is a tactic to intimidate governors into backing his re-election bid. Speaking in an interview with DW Africa on Friday, Amaechi warned that the move was meant to instill fear among state leaders.

On March 18, President Tinubu imposed emergency rule in Rivers, citing prolonged political tensions and attacks on oil infrastructure. The decision led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all state assembly members for six months. In their place, Tinubu appointed Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state’s sole administrator.

The president’s action has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, civil society organizations, and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), with many calling it unconstitutional. Amaechi argued that Fubara was being punished for a crisis beyond his control, pointing out that security matters are under the president’s jurisdiction. He also questioned why similar measures had not been taken in other regions grappling with severe security challenges.

“The president wants a power grab. They want to frighten governors who may not support them in 2027. There’s a rumor everywhere that if you are not careful, the president will remove you,” Amaechi said.

He urged Rivers residents to resist what he described as an abuse of power, calling for democratic protests against Tinubu’s decision.
