Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval to Sack Abia, Adamawa, Sokoto RECs
President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve the dismissal of the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of Abia, Adamawa, and Sokoto states. The officials—Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto)—were suspended over alleged misconduct during the 2023 general election.
Tinubu’s request was contained in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday’s plenary session. In the letter, Tinubu noted that the three RECs had been under suspension since March 2022, before his administration took office.
“The Senate is invited to note that the three resident electoral commissioners have been suspended for misconduct since March 2022 before the advent of the current administration,” the letter stated. The president urged lawmakers to expedite their decision.
Tinubu is also expected to submit names of nominees to fill the vacant positions in the coming days.
