Tinubu Confirms Death of Brigadier General Uba, Laments Kebbi Schoolgirls’ Abduction Despite Intelligence Alerts
President Bola Tinubu has confirmed the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba, who died while leading counter-insurgency operations in Borno. The officer was reportedly ambushed by Islamic State West Africa Province fighters during a mission involving troops and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed grief over the loss of the general and other personnel, offering condolences to their families and the military. He praised their service and described the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers faced by security forces on the front lines.
The president also reacted to the recent abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu local government area of Kebbi. He said the attack occurred despite earlier intelligence pointing to a potential threat from armed groups. Tinubu commended Governor Mohammed Idris for efforts made to avert the assault and announced that Vice-President Kashim Shettima has been directed to visit the state to convey federal support and reassure affected families of ongoing rescue efforts.
Tinubu condemned the security lapse that enabled the kidnapping and called on communities across the country to strengthen cooperation with the military, police, and intelligence agencies. He stressed that timely information from residents remains vital for preventing attacks and improving response to threats.
He said he is deeply pained by the deaths of the troops in Borno and the distress caused to the school community in Kebbi, adding that security agencies have been instructed to act quickly to secure the release of the abducted students.
