JUST IN: President Tinubu Signs North-West and South-East Development Commission Bills into Law
President Bola Tinubu has signed the North-West and South-East Development Commission Bills into law, paving the way for the creation of two critical agencies aimed at tackling longstanding developmental challenges in these regions.
The announcement was made by Senator Jibrin Barau, Deputy President of the Senate and sponsor of the North-West Development Commission Bill, during a press briefing in Abuja. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for endorsing the bill, emphasizing its importance in addressing issues of insecurity and underdevelopment in the North-West.
Simultaneously, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, shared via Facebook that the South-East Development Commission Bill, sponsored by Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, had also received the President’s assent. Nwabughiogu highlighted the bill’s significance for the Igbo community, celebrating this development as a major step forward.
Senator Barau, representing Kano North, praised the President’s commitment to regional development. He explained that the North-West Development Commission would focus on rebuilding and advancing the seven states within the zone, which have been severely affected by Boko Haram insurgency, armed banditry, and other forms of criminality. Barau assured that regional stakeholders would work collaboratively to ensure the commission fulfills its mandate.
“This commission will aid in the infrastructural development and food production necessary for the North-West,” said Senator Barau. “With President Tinubu’s approval, we now have a clear path to restoring growth and stability in the region.”
