Three Men in a Polyamorous Relationship Legally Adopt 3-Year-Old Girl in Canada

 

Three men in a polyamorous relationship have been granted adoption of a three-year-old girl in Quebec, Canada, in what is being described as a legal first for the province.

 

The trio, who live together as a family, went through Quebec’s child protection services and were approved after a thorough home study and court process. Two of the men have already been officially listed as the girl’s legal parents, while the third is seeking full recognition under Quebec’s recently updated family laws, which now recognise multi-parent households.

 

This development follows a landmark ruling in April 2025 by Quebec’s Superior Court, which declared that restricting legal parenthood to only one or two people was unconstitutional. That decision compelled the provincial government to amend the Civil Code, opening the way for children to legally have more than two parents.

 

While the case has been hailed in Canada as a step forward for diverse family structures, reports of the adoption have sparked mixed reactions globally. Supporters argue that the move prioritises the welfare of the child by placing her in a stable and loving home. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the kind of upbringing the girl will receive under such an arrangement.
