“This Is Not a Nightclub”: Senate President Akpabio Cautions Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan

In a heated Senate session on Thursday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio admonished Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central, reminding her that the Senate chamber operates under strict procedural rules, unlike a nightclub. This rebuke came during a debate on the National Road Transport Council (Establishment) Bill, 2024, introduced by Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Oyelola Ashiru (APC Kwara South).

The bill aimed to regulate the road transport industry and profession in Nigeria, addressing various related matters. However, the proposal sparked controversy among the senators. While many supported the bill, notable opposition came from Senators Victor Umeh and Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North), who argued that the proposed Council would duplicate the functions of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO). They contended that passing the bill contradicted the government’s efforts to streamline agencies in line with the Oronsaye report recommendations.

As the debate intensified, Akpabio called for a voice vote to gauge the Senate’s stance on the bill. The vote was inconclusive, with both ‘ayes’ and ‘nays’ being voiced loudly twice. During this time, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who had earlier suggested incorporating water transportation to ease the burden on roads, attempted to speak without prior recognition from Akpabio.

“Mr. President, we don’t want the bill to be killed, we just want a bit of clarification. We don’t want the bill killed, but it should be slightly modified,” she stated.

Akpabio responded sharply, “Distinguished Senator Natasha, in the chamber, you have to be recognized before you speak. We are not in a nightclub.” Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan quickly apologized, saying, “Oh, pardon me.”

The session continued, and after further debate, the bill was ultimately rejected by the Senate.
