“They Threatened To Rape And Kill Her” — Lawyer Speaks On Assault Of Anambra Corps Member

A lawyer representing a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member assaulted by local security operatives in Anambra State has alleged that the attackers threatened to rape and kill her during the incident.

Cyrus Onu, counsel to corps member Jennifer Elobor, said the brutality occurred when armed operatives stormed the corps members’ lodge in Oba community, Idemili South Local Government Area. According to him, the agents, who wore masks and civilian clothes, failed to identify themselves before accusing the corps members of being internet fraudsters.

Onu recounted that Elobor demanded to contact her Local Government Inspector when the operatives attempted to drag the corps members away, but this reportedly provoked further assault. He said the agents beat her, made derogatory remarks, and threatened to strip, rape, and kill her. They also threatened to harm other corps members who tried to defend her. A viral video of the incident showed members of Operation ‘Udo Ga-Achi,’ also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, beating Elobor and tearing her clothes.

The Anambra State Government confirmed the arrest and suspension of the operatives involved. The Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, said they were undergoing disciplinary measures pending further evaluation and possible prosecution.

However, Onu criticised the government’s handling of the matter, describing claims that the victim was uncooperative as false. He insisted that the corps members were intimidated even at the NYSC secretariat where the operatives continued firing gunshots in the air.

The lawyer stressed that beyond prosecution, the perpetrators must face civil consequences. “There must be consequences for bad behaviour, and they will pay damages,” he said, adding that a formal petition had been submitted to the Anambra State Government demanding accountability.
