There’s Nothing Wrong If Fubara Joins APC — Ijaw President

President of the Ijaw Nation, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, has stated that Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s potential move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should not be criticized if it helps to resolve the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Okaba described the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, saying political parties have become mere platforms for political contestation rather than stable institutions.

Okaba emphasized the reality of political mobility in Nigeria, noting that governors and other political figures often switch parties, and this is now a common feature of the country’s political landscape. He referenced Fubara’s recent assurance to do whatever is necessary to restore peace in Rivers State. This comment came after Fubara met with President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, fueling speculation about his possible defection to the APC.

Earlier in March, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state House of Assembly for six months. Tinubu also appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas as the state administrator to oversee governance during the suspension period.
