The 36-storey Residential Apartment Inhabited By Over 20,000 People

The Regent International apartment building situated in Hangzhou, China, is famous for having a number of inhabitants comparable to a small town, with over 20,000 people living in the 36-storey building intitially built as a hotel.

Located in Qianjiang Century City, Hangzhou’s central business district, the S-shaped building was subsequently converted from a hotel into an apartment building, with the rooms turned into thousands of high-end residential apartments.

According to reports, the building is 206 metres tall and has 36 storeys. Like any other self-contained community, it features a variety of amenities and businesses, like a giant food court for its thousands of inhabitants as well as swimming pools, barber shops, nail salons, medium-sized supermarkets and internet cafes, just as residents can find anything they need in the building and they don’t even need to go outside.

According to the Chinese News Agency, Sina, the building was designed by Alicia Loo, the chief designer of the world’s second seven-star hotel, the Singapore Sands Hotel, and was inaugurated in 2013. It quickly became one of the most popular edifices in Hangzhou.

Reports also said the majority of its residents are young professionals who recently graduated from higher institutions or are about to graduate, but there are also young influencers as well as small businesses inhabiting the building.

Occupying more than 260,000 square metres of space, the Regent International apartment building is one of the largest of its kind in China while it has been said in many parts of the country that the sheer number of inhabitants of the building is enough to make a whole town.
