“Thank You, America” – Zelensky Speaks After Heated Clash with Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to the United States following a tense meeting with President Donald Trump that ended in a heated argument. The two leaders met on Friday to discuss efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, but the conversation quickly turned confrontational.
Trump, joined by Vice President JD Vance, criticized Zelensky for what he perceived as a lack of appreciation for American support. The former U.S. president accused Zelensky of obstructing a potential peace deal with Russia, telling him, “You’re right now, not really in a very good position. You’ve allowed yourself to be in a very bad position.” Trump added, “With us, you start having cards,” suggesting Ukraine needed U.S. backing to negotiate effectively. Zelensky pushed back, responding, “I’m not playing cards.”
The meeting ended abruptly, and a White House official confirmed that Zelensky was ordered to leave. Trump subsequently canceled a planned joint press conference with the Ukrainian leader.
Despite the confrontation, Zelensky later expressed gratitude in a social media post. “Thank you, America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit. Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that,” he wrote on X.
Following the tense exchange, Zelensky engaged with European leaders in an effort to reinforce diplomatic support for Ukraine.
