Tension in Benue as Miyetti Allah Alleges 20 Cows Poisoned, 200 Rustled

Tension is rising in Benue State as the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has raised concerns over the alleged poisoning and rustling of its members’ cattle in Agatu Local Government Area. According to the association’s chairman in Benue, Risku Muhammed, over 20 cows were poisoned on Saturday in Ucha village, while more than 200 were rustled last Thursday.

Muhammed claimed that a farmer in Ucha laced rice chaff with poison and invited a herder to feed his cattle, leading to the immediate death of 13 cows, while seven others are receiving veterinary treatment. He also praised Agatu Local Government Chairman Melvin Ejeh and some non-governmental organizations for their efforts in compensating herders for previous cattle losses. He noted that cattle rustling and killings have affected various communities, including Olegodege, Utigologwu, Egwuma, Akele, and Okwtanobe.

Chairman Ejeh confirmed receiving MACBAN’s complaint and assured that investigations were underway. He revealed that a farmer had been arrested in connection with the poisoned cattle. He emphasized that Agatu had been relatively peaceful due to efforts from the state government and security agencies but warned that criminal elements were trying to disrupt the peace process.

Ejeh urged the government to deploy more security personnel to Agatu to prevent further incidents. The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Catherine Anene, confirmed the poisoning incident and the arrest of a suspect. She also highlighted the ongoing efforts of a Peace Committee working to maintain stability in Agatu.
