Teenager Dies After Injecting Himself With Butterfly Remains Mixed With Water
A 14-year-old boy in Planalto, Brazil, has died after reportedly injecting himself with a mixture of butterfly remains and water, an act suspected to be linked to a bizarre online challenge.
Davi Nunes Moreira, 14, passed away in a hospital after his health deteriorated rapidly, with symptoms including severe vomiting. Initially, he told his father that he had injured himself while playing. However, as his condition worsened, he informed medical personnel that he had visited a pharmacy, mixed a dead butterfly with water, and injected the substance into his leg.
Authorities believe the injection may have exposed Moreira to toxins, potentially leading to septic shock and multiple organ failure. Civil Police in Vitoria da Conquista have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of death and whether the incident was influenced by an internet challenge.
Davi’s father discovered the syringe under his son’s pillow while tidying the house, adding further weight to the ongoing investigation. Police are awaiting full post-mortem results to clarify the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
Professor Marcelo Duarte, director of the Zoology Museum at Sao Paulo University and an expert on butterflies, commented that the toxicity of fluids present in butterflies’ bodies has not been extensively studied in relation to human health. His statement underscores the potential dangers of handling and ingesting unknown biological substances.
Authorities continue to examine the case, urging caution over online trends that encourage dangerous behavior. The results of the autopsy are expected to provide critical insights into the cause of Moreira’s death and any underlying toxicological factors involved.
