Technical Glitches Ground Nigerian Presidential Jets, Tinubu Forced to Fly Commercial to Saudi Arabia

In a rare occurrence that has raised eyebrows and concerns within the Nigerian government, President Bola Tinubu was forced to travel on a commercial flight to Saudi Arabia after both presidential jets broke down within days of each other. The unexpected incident has highlighted the aging state of the presidential fleet and sparked renewed calls for its modernization.

President Tinubu was in The Hague, Netherlands, for a series of diplomatic engagements when his designated presidential jet experienced a major technical issue, including an oxygen leak. This mishap followed the earlier grounding of his main presidential aircraft, which has been undergoing maintenance in Switzerland since late March.

With no other official plane available, President Tinubu and his team had to charter a private jet to continue their journey. The president’s entourage took off from Rotterdam on a Falcon 8X private jet and arrived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on April 26 for an economic summit. His ministers and other high-ranking officials had to rely on commercial flights to reach their destinations.

The grounding of both presidential jets has caused concern not only about the reliability of the country’s fleet but also about the safety implications for high-ranking government officials. The maintenance records of the Boeing 737, the main presidential jet, revealed that it has undergone significant repairs multiple times in recent years, raising questions about its longevity and safety.

While the incident with the presidential aircraft is concerning, it is not the first time such an event has occurred. The same Boeing 737 required repairs seven times in the past three years, costing the government over $8 million since December 2022 alone. Aviation experts have criticized this spending, suggesting that investing in a new plane could be more cost-effective and safer in the long run.

The Nigerian government has yet to release a formal statement regarding the incident, and officials from the Nigerian Air Force have declined to comment. However, there are growing concerns among administration officials about the potential dangers posed by the frequent breakdowns and the embarrassment it causes the country.

An anonymous source within the administration mentioned that the persistent issues with the presidential fleet could lead to “a catastrophe of historic proportions” if not addressed soon. Given Nigeria’s near-perfect record in air travel safety among its leaders since the 1960s, these incidents have generated significant worry among government officials and the public alike.

The frequent aircraft malfunctions have drawn attention to the need for a thorough review of the presidential fleet’s maintenance practices and whether it would be more prudent to replace the aging aircraft. As President Tinubu’s administration continues with its official duties, the pressure to address these safety concerns grows.
