Super Eagles Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye Faces Potential Four-Year Ban
Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who plays for Italian Serie A club Udinese, is under investigation by the Udine Public Prosecutor’s Office for alleged involvement in illegal betting activities. Reports from Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport indicate that betting agency Sisal flagged suspicious gambling patterns related to Okoye’s yellow card during Udinese’s away match against Lazio in March 2024.
Okoye was booked for time-wasting in the 64th minute of the match, raising concerns over possible foul play. Authorities are also investigating Diego Giordano, the owner of Biffi pizzeria in Udine, who is alleged to have played a role in a verbal betting agreement at his restaurant. If found guilty, Okoye could face a four-year ban from football along with possible legal consequences.
The goalkeeper’s legal representatives have dismissed the accusations, insisting they are baseless and lack credible evidence. Betting scandals have led to significant bans for several footballers in recent years, including Sandro Tonali, Kieran Trippier, and Ivan Toney. Football associations worldwide enforce strict rules against players betting on their own matches, passing insider information, or influencing betting outcomes.
Okoye, who recently underwent wrist surgery, has been out of action for Udinese, prompting the club to sign Norwegian goalkeeper Egil Selvik as cover. He made his return to the Nigerian national team in November 2024 after a two-year absence, playing in a 2-1 victory over Rwanda in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
