Sunday Bus Crash in Brazil Leaves 17 Dead

Seventeen people tragically lost their lives on Sunday when a bus plunged into a ravine on a remote mountain road in northeastern Brazil’s Alagoas state. Authorities confirmed that several others were injured in the crash.

The incident occurred on a mountain road leading to a historical site near the town of Uniao dos Palmares. According to regional authorities, the bus was carrying around 40 passengers when it went off the road, falling into a ravine more than 20 meters (65 feet) deep. Police are currently working to identify the victims and recover bodies from the wreckage.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences and vowed to support the state authorities in their response to the disaster. On the social media platform X, he promised the government’s full assistance in providing care and support to the victims and their families.

Alagoas Governor Paulo Dantas also declared three days of mourning for those lost in the tragedy, calling it a “deeply painful event.”

The bus was reportedly en route to a historical site in the Serra da Barriga mountain range, a location of significance to Brazilians. The area was home to the Quilombo dos Palmares, a settlement founded by escaped slaves in the 17th century. The community was eventually destroyed by Portuguese colonial forces. The crash occurred during a time of reflection, as November is observed as “Black Awareness” month in Brazil, with events commemorating the legacy of the Quilombo and its leaders, including the anniversary of Zumbi’s death on November 20.

Racial Equality Minister Anielle Franco shared her sorrow on social media, noting that the accident was especially heartbreaking given the State’s significance during Black Awareness observances.
