Student Dies After Jumping From School Building, Mental Health Concerns Raised
A Form Four student at Sironga Girls’ High School, Nyamira County, Kenya, tragically died after allegedly jumping from the second floor of the school’s administration block early Saturday morning. The student, identified as Mitchelle Cheptoo, was among those preparing for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams set for October.
According to the school’s principal, Jane Nyanumba, the incident occurred at around 5 am as students were getting ready to start their day. “The girls were preparing to begin the day’s activities when the student jumped from the building. She was injured and immediately rushed to Nyamira County Referral Hospital, where she was pronounced dead,” Nyanumba said.
Nyanumba expressed shock at the incident, noting that Mitchelle had shown no signs of distress leading up to the tragic event. “She appeared okay, slept well, and did not exhibit any concerning behavior. We are deeply disturbed, as this has shaken the entire school community.”
Nyamira South Deputy County Commissioner, Florence Obunga, confirmed the incident, saying authorities were alerted when the student was taken to the hospital after sustaining serious head injuries. “We visited the hospital alongside the sub-county security team, and unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries. We later returned to the school to inform the other students, who are now in deep shock,” said Obunga.
Despite the school’s strong counselling department, it appears that Mitchelle had not confided in anyone about her struggles. “She was often quiet and kept to herself,” Obunga added.
Local leaders have also expressed their condolences and concern following the tragic event. West Mugirango MP, Steve M. Mogaka, described the news as devastating, calling for a thorough investigation into the cause of Mitchelle’s death. “The motive behind this tragic act remains unclear, and it is essential that investigating agencies get to the bottom of it to prevent future incidents,” Mogaka said.
Mogaka emphasized the growing importance of mental health support, particularly for students, adding that he plans to introduce a motion in Parliament to include mandatory counseling lessons in schools to curb rising suicide cases among young people.
“I stand in solidarity with Mitchelle Cheptoo’s family and the Sironga Girls’ community during this incredibly difficult time,” the MP concluded.
