“Strike Action Continues Until Our Legitimate Demands Are Fully Met” — FCTA, FCDA Workers Reject Wike’s Intimidation Tactics
Workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) will continue their strike indefinitely, following a decision by their unions to challenge a recent ruling of the National Industrial Court.
The Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) said it has filed an appeal against the court’s judgement, arguing that the appeal provides legal grounds for the industrial action to remain in force until workers’ demands are addressed.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary and circulated to members on Thursday, JUAC accused the leadership of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, of relying on pressure and threats rather than meaningful engagement to resolve the dispute.
The union directed workers to remain at home and maintain unity, insisting that the issues that triggered the strike remain unresolved.
“Strike action continues,” the statement said, adding that workers’ compliance with the stay-at-home directive had strengthened the union’s position.
JUAC alleged that there have been attempts by government officials and management to intimidate workers and union leaders in order to force an end to the strike. It said such actions would not succeed and would not alter the union’s position.
The committee expressed appreciation to FCTA and FCDA staff for what it described as discipline and solidarity, despite what it called mounting pressure from authorities.
According to JUAC, responsibility for ending the impasse lies with the government, which it urged to address workers’ grievances directly rather than pursue what it described as coercive measures.
The union reaffirmed its directive for all FCTA and FCDA workers to stay away from work until further notice, pending new instructions from its leadership.
