Speeding Bus Crashes Into Stationary Truck, Leaving 10 Dead on Lagos-Badagry Road

In a tragic early morning accident on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at least 10 people, including three children, were killed when a commercial bus collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway at Abule-Osun, inward Iyana-Iba.

The accident, which occurred around 2:15 a.m., involved a Toyota Sienna bus, registration number BDG 342 FS, reportedly speeding, and a SHACMAN truck loaded with granite that had been parked on the road. The collision left 10 passengers dead, while three others were critically injured and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), attributed the crash to excessive speeding. He explained that the parked truck occupied half of the carriageway, leading to the fatal crash when the bus, traveling at high speed, rammed into it from behind.

“Unfortunately, 10 passengers lost their lives in this tragic incident, while three others were critically injured,” Oke-Osanyitolu said. “The deceased include three male adults, four female adults, two female children, and one male child. One of the survivors, a female adult, later succumbed to her injuries.”

Emergency services, including the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), promptly arrived at the scene to treat the survivors. Two of the children and one female adult who initially survived were taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for further medical attention.

Officials from LASEMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Nigerian Police, and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) were involved in the rescue operation. The bodies of the victims were recovered and taken to the mortuary by SEHMU officials.

As of 5:00 a.m., both the Toyota Sienna and the broken-down truck had been cleared from the road, allowing traffic to flow smoothly once again.
