Soldier Kills Five in Bar Shooting, Arrested by Military
A tragic incident shook Rwanda early Wednesday morning when a Rwandan soldier opened fire in a bar in a southwestern town, leaving five civilians dead. The gunman, identified by the Rwandan Defence Forces (RDF) as a 39-year-old sergeant, was swiftly apprehended, and the RDF has pledged to take appropriate legal action.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, with no immediate explanation provided for what led to the deadly incident. However, RDF officials emphasized their commitment to holding the perpetrator accountable.
The incident is a grim reminder of earlier concerns about military conduct in Rwanda. In 2020, six soldiers were arrested on charges of assaulting civilians in the capital, Kigali, during the COVID-19 lockdown, facing allegations of rape and physical abuse in the Kangondo slum.
