Six Boko Haram Fighters Surrender to MNJTF Troops
The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has announced that six Boko Haram fighters have surrendered to its troops during recent operations in various areas under its jurisdiction.
According to MNJTF spokesperson Lt. Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, one of the surrendered Boko Haram fighters gave himself up to the troops with his wife, two children, and 36 hand grenades. These events took place between April 17 and 27, primarily in the areas managed by the 403 Amphibious Brigade, Sector 3 in Monguno, as well as other MNJTF sectors.
The surrendering individuals provided various reasons for abandoning their terrorist affiliation. The first individual to surrender was a 19-year-old from Masarram on the Lake Chad Island, who had been residing at Duguri. He mentioned growing discontent within Boko Haram as a reason for his surrender. Abdullahi indicated that this individual had been affiliated with Boko Haram’s Buduma faction for three years.
Additionally, on April 25, two other suspected terrorists surrendered to MNJTF troops in Blangua, Cameroon, while another individual, along with his family and hand grenades, surrendered to the 403 Amphibious Brigade in the Kwatam Turare axis, Baga, Borno on April 26. This individual, a foot soldier since 2017 in Sharama, cited internal crisis and the MNJTF’s Operation Nashrul Salam as reasons for defecting.
Finally, a 25-year-old suspected terrorist turned himself in to the 19 Brigade, Sector 3, in Kekeno, within Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno. During the initial investigation, the suspect revealed that he had been abducted by Boko Haram militants along the Monguno-Maiduguri road in 2020 and forced to work as a storekeeper in a terrorist camp on the islands of Lake Chad.
The MNJTF is calling on other Boko Haram members to follow suit, cease hostilities, and embrace peace. The task force remains committed to restoring lasting peace and stability to the Lake Chad Basin.
