Shutdown Alert: National Assembly Braces for Nationwide #EndHunger Protest, Imposes Strict Security Measures, Advises Aides to Stay Home
In preparation for the upcoming nationwide #EndHunger protest, the National Assembly (NASS) has announced a series of stringent security measures to ensure the safety of its complex and staff. A memo released by the federal parliament on Tuesday advised legislative workers to stay home and detailed the deployment of heavy security around the NASS premises.
The National Assembly Management communicated these measures to the National Assembly Legislative Aides’ Forum (NASSLAF), requesting the Forum to inform its members. The heightened security protocols are set to begin on August 1, 2024, and include the following key points:
Restricted Access: Entry to the NASS Complex will be limited to NASS staff, legislative aides, and essential service workers. Construction activities are suspended, and site workers are barred from accessing the premises.
Security Deployment: There will be a substantial security presence around the NASS Complex to manage any potential threats.
Identification Requirement: Entry will strictly be based on the presentation of a valid identification card. Aides with a Letter of Appointment or Temporary ID Card will not be granted access.
Visitor Limitations: Legislative aides are discouraged from bringing visitors to the NASS Complex. Members of the National Assembly are also urged to minimize the number of visitors during the protest.
Single Access Point: Access to the National Assembly will be restricted to the main gate only.
Compliance and Cooperation: Aides are advised to cooperate with the Sergeant at Arms and security agents during entry checks and to remain civil throughout the process.
Work Attendance: It is not mandatory for aides to attend work during the first 10 days of the protest if they perceive any danger. NASSLAF and PASAN buses will not operate during the initial phase of the protest.
Safety Precautions: Aides are urged to be vigilant and cautious about their surroundings, taking all necessary steps to avoid harm.
The memo emphasizes that these measures are necessary to ensure the safety of everyone at the National Assembly during the period of heightened tension associated with the #EndHunger protest.
