Shock in Anambra: Young Woman Stages Own Kidnap, Police Nab Lovers in ₦3m Ransom Scam
Residents of Anambra State have been left in shock after police uncovered a bizarre case in which a young woman allegedly staged her own kidnapping in a bid to extort millions of naira from her family.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, confirmed the arrest of 23-year-old Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye and her 24-year-old boyfriend, Chibuike Ogbu, who conspired to orchestrate the fake abduction. The duo was apprehended by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, following intelligence-driven investigations.
According to police reports, the suspects demanded a staggering ₦15 million ransom from Nwoye’s family. After negotiations, the family transferred ₦3 million directly into the victim’s account, believing she was being held captive. Police operatives, however, tracked the movement of funds and swiftly moved in, rescuing Nwoye and arresting both suspects. A total of ₦1.2 million, being part of the ransom already collected, was recovered.
CP Orutugu, visibly disturbed by the incident, described the case as a worrying reflection of rising moral decay among young people. He lamented that instead of channeling their energy into productive ventures, many now resort to deception and criminality for selfish gains.
“This incident highlights the disturbing erosion of values in our society. It is unacceptable that a young woman would conspire with her partner to defraud her own family. Parents, guardians, and religious leaders must redouble efforts in instilling discipline, integrity, and sound morals in our youths,” the Commissioner said.
He further warned that the law will always catch up with offenders, no matter how clever their schemes may appear. “No criminal plan is foolproof. Sooner or later, the long arm of justice will reach them,” he stressed.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Saturday in Awka, assuring that the suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
