Sheikh Gumi Calls Nigerians Supporting U.S. Airstrikes ‘Stupid’

Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmed Gumi has criticized Nigerians who have expressed support for the recent U.S. airstrikes against extremist groups in Sokoto State, describing their backing as “stupid” and misinformed.

The airstrikes, reportedly conducted with the Nigerian government’s approval, targeted camps linked to the Islamic State. Officials described the operations as precision strikes based on intelligence shared by Abuja, intended to weaken insurgent networks.

Gumi condemned the Nigerian government for permitting foreign military involvement and called for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces. Addressing citizens who welcomed the strikes, he argued that their approval ignores the broader security and sovereignty implications.

“This is nothing but a betrayal of our Nigerians,” Gumi said in a video. “Some people think that since we cannot end insecurity, U.S. intervention is welcome. That is a misunderstanding of national security.”

He also directly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump, accusing him of being responsible for civilian deaths abroad. “This person has his hands stained with the blood of children and adults. How can you call for help from a thief when they enter your house?” he said.

In a Facebook post titled *‘The Symbolism of the U.S. Strike’*, Gumi warned that allowing U.S. cooperation risks turning Nigeria into a battlefield and attracting anti-U.S. forces. He suggested alternative partners, including China, Turkey, and Pakistan, as capable of providing military support without compromising sovereignty.

Gumi further cautioned that framing foreign intervention as a religious protection effort could exacerbate divisions within Nigeria and weaken national unity.
