Shehu Sani Explains How to Impeach Senate President Akpabio
In a pointed statement on Tuesday, former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani detailed the procedural steps required to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Addressing the contentious issue on social media, Sani emphasized the necessity for a senator to rally sufficient support among colleagues to initiate the impeachment process.
Sani cautioned that any senator who attempts and fails to secure Akpabio’s impeachment would likely face suspension until the next election cycle. “Removing Akpabio is only possible if a senator consults his colleagues and gets enough votes to initiate an impeachment,” Sani posted on X (formerly Twitter). “If the plot fails, the senator may go on suspension till the next election. That is it.”
This discourse arises amidst calls from prominent activist Aisha Yesufu for Akpabio’s ousting. Yesufu urged the Senate to act following Akpabio’s controversial remarks prior to the EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest. She underscored the urgency, stating: “Dear Senators. It is time to impeach Godswill Akpabio. It is still one of you that will replace him as Senate President.”
Yesufu’s call followed Akpabio’s dismissive comment regarding nationwide protests against President Bola Tinubu, where he suggested that senators would be eating while the public demonstrated. This has further fueled public and political scrutiny of Akpabio’s leadership and statements.
