Seven Bus Passengers Killed in Taraba Attack, Police Confirm
Seven individuals lost their lives in an attack on an 18-seater bus at Gamkwe, a village in Mararaban-Baissa of Donga Local Government Area in Taraba State. The assailants targeted passengers from Zaki/Biam in Benue State who were en route to Maihula in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Commissioner of Police in Taraba State, David Iloyonomon, disclosed that the police responded swiftly to the situation, dispatching officers to the area. During their patrol, the officers discovered seven bodies in the bush, amidst efforts to control the crisis between members of the Ichen and Tiv ethnic groups.
The unrest began when Ichen youths reported the disappearance of a pastor and a church member while on their way to the church. Subsequently, tensions escalated, leading to violent clashes between Ichen and Tiv residents. The situation prompted the police to intervene, rescuing some Tiv individuals to ensure their safety in Takum.
Survivor Jimen Angera, the bus driver, recounted the harrowing ordeal, stating that at least 15 people, including women and children, were killed in the attack. Angera described the assailants as members of a vigilante group armed with guns, machetes, and other weapons.
Chairman of Donga Local Government, Ezra Voka, confirmed the incident and expressed his involvement in the search for the victims, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
As investigations continue into this tragic event, authorities are working tirelessly to restore peace and apprehend those responsible for the senseless violence.
