Senate Approves 300% Pay Increase for CJN, Judicial Officers

The Senate has approved a bill proposing a 300% salary increase for the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, along with other judicial officers. This decision came after the bill successfully passed its third reading on Wednesday.

The approval followed the adoption of a report presented by Mohammed Monguno, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters. Monguno emphasized the importance of adequate remuneration for judicial officers, stating that financial security would enable them to focus on their professional duties without distraction.

“Adequate remuneration will allow judicial officers to focus on their professional development without worrying about financial constraint. Hence, it will improve their professionalism and decision-making skills. Fair compensation for judicial officers is crucial for maintaining public trust in the judiciary’s impartiality and integrity,” Monguno explained.

He also highlighted that the proposed pay increase has been incorporated into the 2024 Appropriation Act, ensuring its implementation in the upcoming fiscal year.
