Security Incident at Enugu Broadcasting Service as Private Guard Accidentally Shoots Self

A potentially dangerous incident occurred at the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) on Wednesday when a private security guard accidentally shot himself in the foot. Fortunately, no one else was harmed in the event, and a baby in the guard’s care was uninjured.

The incident happened during a routine visit by ESBS Managing Director, Ladi Akeredolu-Ali, to the station’s newsroom. The guard, accompanying Akeredolu-Ali, was holding the baby of a staff member when his gun slipped from his grip. While attempting to retrieve the weapon, the guard inadvertently pulled the trigger, causing the gun to discharge into his foot.

Sources revealed the incident occurred during a busy news production period, putting several employees, including three editors and the Managing Director, at risk. However, swift action ensured the safety of all nearby individuals, and the situation was brought under control.

Eyewitnesses report that the gun fell to the ground, and as the guard tried to fix it, the Managing Director instructed him to point the muzzle away from his direction. Despite the warning, the weapon discharged, causing the injury.

“This happened around 3:20 pm, just before the 4 pm news bulletin. Luckily, someone had taken the baby from him moments before the shot was fired,” one source said.

Another source highlighted concerns about the heavy security presence at ESBS since Akeredolu-Ali assumed his position. The Managing Director reportedly employed over 10 armed hunters for personal protection, a move that has left staff and visitors feeling intimidated.

“There’s a noticeable militarization of the workplace. These armed personnel are always present, even during staff meetings or live programmes, and have been known to treat guests with hostility,” said one staff member.

Several internal security guards were also suspended indefinitely after being accused of theft. However, despite their removal, theft issues at the station have reportedly persisted.

Efforts to contact the Managing Director for comment on the situation were unsuccessful at the time of this report. Calls and text messages seeking clarification went unanswered.
