SDP Launches Probe into Financial Misconduct Allegations Against Gabam, Two Others
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has inaugurated a disciplinary committee to investigate allegations of financial misconduct involving its former National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, alongside the party’s National Auditor, Mr. Clarkson, and National Youth Leader, Mr. Ogbonna Uchechukwu. The trio were recently suspended over accusations of submitting fraudulent audited financial reports to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and alleged financial malfeasance.
The disciplinary committee was formally inaugurated on July 4 and is chaired by Mr. Liman S. Abubakar, a National Chieftain of the SDP. Other members include Wafari Theman, National Vice Chairman (North East); Dr. Kingsley Obinna Agbo, Chairman of the party in Ebonyi State; Hajiya Laila Mohammed, a National Chieftain; and Williams Adelewa, Zonal Chieftain, who will serve as Secretary.
According to the party, the committee has been tasked with uncovering the facts behind the allegations, examining the financial records of the party, and determining how the controversial audited accounts were prepared and submitted to INEC. The committee is also expected to recommend necessary corrective actions and propose improved financial management systems to prevent future violations of the party’s Constitution.
At the inauguration, the acting National Chairman, Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, emphasized that the committee’s work is aimed at cleansing and repositioning the SDP to fulfill its role in Nigeria’s political future. He urged the members to carry out their assignment with integrity, fairness, and transparency, stressing the importance of accountability.
“In discharging your duties, we implore you to be just and impartial. Let your findings speak for themselves. If an issue is white, say it is white; if black, say it is black. Report everything truthfully and objectively,” Dr. Gombe said, reminding the committee members that their actions are accountable to both the party and to God.
He further clarified that the investigation is not intended to witch-hunt any individual but is necessary to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. He called on the committee to treat all individuals appearing before it with respect and to uphold the principle that all accused persons are presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
