Ruben Neves Denies Romance Rumors After Magazine Shows Him Kissing Diogo Jota’s Widow

Ruben Neves, former Wolves captain and close friend of the late Liverpool star Diogo Jota, has publicly denied romantic links to Jota’s widow following a controversial magazine cover.

Portuguese magazine TV Guia published a front-page image showing Neves seemingly kissing Rute Cardoso, Jota’s widow, alongside an article titled, “After death: How Diogo Jota’s widow leans on his best friend.” The photo sparked speculation about their relationship, which Neves strongly refuted.

In a statement on social media, Neves emphasized his long-standing marriage to Debora Lourenco, with whom he has been together for over 11 years. He wrote:

“We have done our best to help Rute and her family in the best way we can. The choice of this photo is as unhappy as the person who chose it. I respect everyone’s work, but I don’t respect those who don’t respect others.”

Neves, who now plays for Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, has been a consistent support for Cardoso and her family since the tragic deaths of Jota and his brother Andre in a car accident in early July. Jota, 28, had married Rute just days before the crash and is survived by three children.

In a touching tribute, Neves recently unveiled a tattoo of himself hugging Jota. He also will wear Jota’s Portugal shirt number, 21, as a way to honor his late friend’s legacy, while Liverpool has retired Jota’s No. 20 shirt. Portugal manager Roberto Martinez confirmed the decision, noting Neves’ close bond with Jota.

Jota and Neves shared a long footballing history together, featuring alongside each other 164 times for Porto, Wolves, and Portugal.
