Rivers Political Rift: Police Commissioner Issues Warning Amid Fubara-Wike Feud
In the wake of escalating tensions between Governor Similanayi Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike, now serving as Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Rivers State Police Command has issued a stern warning to politicians. They have been cautioned against resorting to verbal attacks that could potentially incite violence within the state.
The warning, delivered by Police Commissioner Tunji Disu, though not directly naming the feuding politicians, addresses the need for lawful resolution of grievances rather than exacerbating tensions through inflammatory rhetoric. The ongoing crisis between Fubara and Wike has sparked division among political stakeholders in Rivers.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Grace Iringe Koko emphasized the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and upholding the rule of law. Koko reiterated the police’s role in enforcing laws, protecting lives and properties, and ensuring the overall stability of the state.
“The Rivers State Police Command is fully aware of the numerous political statements and sentiments circulating within the state,” Koko stated. “We implore the public and the esteemed people of Rivers State to abide by the laws of the land and refrain from actions that may disrupt the existing peace.”
Furthermore, Koko emphasized the command’s neutrality and apolitical stance amidst the current political unrest, underscoring the importance of seeking peaceful and lawful means to address grievances.
With tensions running high, the Rivers State Police Command’s warning serves as a timely reminder of the need for responsible political conduct to prevent further escalation and maintain stability within the state.
