Rivers Political Crisis: Wike Gives Fubara Two Conditions for Peace
The ongoing political standoff in Rivers State has taken a new turn as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, has outlined two key conditions for peace to return. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Wike stated that Governor Siminalayi Fubara must re-present the 2025 budget to the State Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule and resubmit the names of his commissioners for proper clearance.
Wike emphasized that peace in Rivers State hinges on legality and adherence to due process, asserting that “peace is predicated on doing the right thing.” He warned that Fubara cannot expect calm without first correcting what he described as unconstitutional actions. “Go and re-present the budget, go and submit the list of the commissioners. You cannot do illegality,” Wike insisted.
Reflecting on his decision to support Fubara’s emergence as governor, Wike claimed he stood by him despite opposition from several political figures of Ijaw origin. He further stated that Ijaws remain a minority in both Rivers State and the wider Niger Delta region, with Bayelsa being the only state in the area where they could realistically secure the governorship.
