Rift Between Minister Wike, Governor Fubara Escalates Amid Impeachment Speculation
A growing divide between the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has surfaced, just six months after the power transition between the two prominent political figures.
Sources suggest that this apparent fracture in their alliance stems from Nyesom Wike’s perceived overbearing influence and control over the state, even after his tenure as the FCT Minister.
Concerns have been raised by stakeholders in Rivers State regarding the seemingly sluggish pace of governance since Fubara took office. Meanwhile, rumours of an impending impeachment of the governor are gaining momentum.
Insiders within the state Assembly have disclosed plans to first target Edison Ehie, the State Assembly leader, who is known for opposing Nyesom Wike’s autocratic tendencies.
This internal strife reached a dangerous climax when suspected thugs stormed the Assembly complex on Sunday, using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to set the building ablaze.
As a result, the police have taken control of the Assembly complex, deploying over 17 armored vehicles and stern-looking security personnel to maintain order.
While there has been relative inactivity in the state, Governor Fubara recently appointed 14 commissioners and assigned them portfolios. Following criticism from opposition parties, he inaugurated an additional five commissioners after their screening by the House of Assembly.
The feud between Wike and Fubara became more apparent after the swearing-in of these latest commissioners. Wike reportedly disapproved of Fubara’s efforts to revive the Shonghai Farm and other programs initiated by his predecessor, Chibuike Amaechi.
In response to these developments, several youth groups have issued strong warnings to Nyesom Wike, urging him not to disrupt the relative peace in the state and vowing to protect the governor’s position.
The Coalition of Democratic Vanguard, a united group of concerned citizens, has condemned Wike and his allies for their alleged attempts to impeach Governor Fubara and Assembly leader Edison Ehie. The coalition called for respect for the democratic process and prioritizing the betterment of Rivers State.
The National Youth Council of Nigeria in Rivers has also expressed its support for Governor Fubara, warning those seeking to undermine his tenure to be cautious, as the youth will not tolerate any attempts to remove the governor from office.
