Reverse Japa: Why I Left My Job at Johns Hopkins in the USA to Return with My Family to Nigeria – Medical Doctor

In a bold move, Nigerian medical doctor Julius Oni has returned to Nigeria after 25 years in the United States, leaving his position at Johns Hopkins University. In a viral video, Oni explained his decision, revealing that he sold his house and cars and took a leave of absence from his prestigious job to pursue his mission of improving healthcare in Nigeria.

“I reversed JAPA from the US to Nigeria. Six weeks ago, I relocated, packed my bags with my lovely wife and beautiful children, and moved back home,” he shared.

An Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Oni expressed a strong commitment to providing quality healthcare for Nigerian patients. “Some may think I am delusional or crazy, but I am driven by conviction. I believe that Nigerian patients deserve excellent care as well,” he stated.

To fulfill this vision, Oni has launched DOC Medical Nigeria, aimed at offering high-quality musculoskeletal care locally. “My mission is to ensure that people don’t have to travel abroad for orthopedic surgery,” he added.

Since the initiative’s inception, Oni has welcomed patients from various locations, including Ghana and the UK, demonstrating the growing need for accessible healthcare services in Nigeria. “Many patients who would have traveled are now able to receive quality orthopedic care right here,” he noted, highlighting his dedication to enhancing healthcare access in the country.
