Reps Probe Alleged Financial Scandal in Ministry of Women Affairs
In a bid to address allegations of rampant financial mismanagement within the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs, the House of Representatives has announced plans for a thorough investigation.
During an investigative hearing led by Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs, concerns were raised over the payment of a staggering sum of N510 million into accounts of contractors who reportedly did not partake in the bidding process. The hearing, convened at the behest of the House Committee on Procurement, chaired by Hon. Unyime Idem, aimed to shed light on the matter.
According to Hon. Idem, the contractors voiced grievances regarding the irregular disbursement of funds. Despite being awarded contracts, some claimed they had not received payments or mobilization fees from the Ministry of Women Affairs. Shockingly, investigations revealed that the funds had been transferred to accounts unrelated to the bidding process, sparking accusations of procurement fraud.
The Committee, having obtained details of the alleged malpractice from the office of the Accountant General, pressed the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, for clarification during the hearing. However, the Minister contested the accuracy of the information provided by the Accountant General’s office, citing discrepancies in the figures.
Expressing frustration over the Ministry’s handling of the situation, Hon. Ogbara highlighted a lack of cooperation and transparency on the part of the Minister. Allegations of misappropriation and diversion of funds further exacerbated tensions, prompting the Committee to schedule another hearing on May 30th, 2024, with the Minister, Permanent Secretary, and relevant Directors mandated to appear.
In response, Minister Kennedy-Ohaneye defended her actions, emphasizing the Ministry’s financial constraints and her personal investment in keeping operations afloat. She appealed for the Committee’s support in rectifying the situation and ensuring the rightful disbursement of funds to contractors.
