Report That Jonathan Has Stepped Aside for 2027 Is a ‘Blatant Lie’ — Cousin
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed reports claiming he has stepped aside from the 2027 presidential race.
The rebuttal follows a Newsweek Nigeria publication alleging that Jonathan had rejected pressure to contest so as not to undermine Southern unity.
Reacting on Friday, Jonathan’s cousin, Azibaola Robert, debunked the report in a post on his verified Facebook page, describing it as “fake” and urging Nigerians to disregard it.
“While the former president has not formally declared his interest, he has also not ruled himself out of the 2027 contest,” Azibaola clarified.
He further dismissed claims attributed to an unnamed “aide of Jonathan” as false, insisting such a source does not exist.
Azibaola added that Jonathan has consistently refused calls not to run, noting that those behind such campaigns were motivated by selfish interests.
Although Jonathan has yet to make an official announcement, political watchers point to ongoing consultations across the country as signs of a possible second-term bid.
