Rabies Outbreak Confirmed in Ajah, Lagos – NVMA Issues Public Health Alert

A rabies outbreak has been confirmed in the Ajah area of Lagos State, according to the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA). The confirmation follows laboratory testing by the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) in Vom, Plateau State.

In a public advisory, NVMA Lagos Chairman, Dr. Ofua Mark, linked the outbreak to the increasing number of unlicensed individuals posing as veterinarians and administering vaccines without proper oversight. He warned that the misuse of rabies vaccines, though widely available, is putting public health at serious risk.

“It is deeply troubling that some dog breeders now administer vaccines themselves without any veterinary supervision. This reckless practice jeopardizes community safety,” said Dr. Mark.

In response to the outbreak, the NVMA has formally notified key health authorities, including the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). The state government has launched containment efforts, including contact tracing, isolation of suspected cases, and enhanced surveillance throughout the Ajah-Lekki axis.

Rabies is a deadly but preventable viral disease, primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, especially dogs. The association is urging residents of Ajah and nearby communities to remain alert, ensure their pets are vaccinated by licensed professionals, and report any animal bites or abnormal pet behavior without delay.

Dr. Mark emphasized that although the outbreak is currently under control, the public should avoid contact with stray animals and seek immediate medical attention if bitten. He also stressed the urgent need for strict enforcement of veterinary regulations to eliminate the activities of quacks whose practices threaten both human and animal lives.

The NVMA has pledged continued collaboration with state and federal agencies to monitor developments, disseminate accurate information, and intensify public awareness efforts. Residents are encouraged to contact the Lagos NVMA or visit the nearest certified veterinary clinic for further information or to report incidents.

“With collective responsibility and adherence to professional veterinary care, we can achieve a rabies-free Lagos,” Dr. Mark said.
