Protest Organisers in Abuja Request Eagle Square Access from FCT Minister Wike for Planned Demonstration
Organizers of the upcoming nationwide protest have formally requested the use of Eagle Square in Abuja from August 1 to 10, 2024, for their demonstration. In a letter to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, the protesters asked for unrestricted 24/7 access to the venue for the duration of the protest, and potentially beyond.
Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement (TIB) in Abuja, signed the letter. Adenola highlighted the need for continuous access to the national asset, stating that the protest might extend beyond the planned ten days due to ongoing issues with the ruling party.
The letter included specific requests for 24-hour power supply, toilet facilities, water, and security at Eagle Square to ensure the comfort and safety of the protesters. It also called for the removal of the outer wire mesh barrier facing Aso Rock Villa to allow protesters potential access to the Presidential Villa during the demonstration.
The protest organizers emphasized their expectation to be treated with the same courtesy as foreign and local dignitaries who frequently use the space.
However, Minister Wike had previously urged FCT residents to refrain from protesting on August 1, suggesting that they join in celebratory activities instead. He noted that the day had been designated for the presentation of certificates of recognition to traditional rulers by the Chairmen of the six Area Councils of the FCT, following a decision made during a Security Council meeting in Abuja.
Wike’s stance sets the stage for potential conflict over the use of Eagle Square as the protest date approaches.
