Prospective NYSC Member Dies, Others Injured in Ebonyi Road Accident
A prospective female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) lost her life in a tragic road accident in Ebonyi State on Wednesday. The incident occurred along the Amasiri-Okigwe route in Amenu village, Okposi.
Reports indicate that the deceased was among 12 prospective corps members traveling in a 14-seater commercial bus when it collided with a stationary truck. The victims were en route to the NYSC Orientation Camp in Afikpo for their three-week training as part of the 2024 Batch C Stream II.
The Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Igwe Henry, confirmed the accident but stated that his team did not witness the initial rescue efforts. “By the time our officers from the Amasiri Unit Command arrived at the scene, the victims had already been taken to the hospital,” he said. He attributed the crash to excessive speed on the part of the commercial bus.
The injured victims were rushed to King David Umahi Hospital in Uburu, where FRSC officials later confirmed that those they saw were in stable condition. Personal belongings recovered from the scene are reportedly in the custody of a local community leader.
When contacted, the Ebonyi State NYSC Coordinator, Foluke Oladeinde, confirmed the incident but was too distressed to provide further details, as she was attending to the affected corps members at the hospital.
Sources revealed that the victims had boarded the bus in Enugu on the morning of the accident. The deceased, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, reportedly succumbed to her injuries while others sustained varying degrees of harm.
