Prisons Bus Accident Leaves Four Dead, Many Injured in Ilorin

Chaos and heart-wrenching scenes gripped the streets of Ilorin, Kwara State, as a tragic incident unfolded on October 19, leaving four people dead and numerous others injured. The incident was sparked by an accident involving a vehicle transporting inmates to court, which belonged to the Nigerian Prisons Services (NPS).

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the ill-fated vehicle allegedly flouted traffic regulations, leading to the accident. Tragically, the vehicle also struck and killed a motorcyclist on Niger Road as the driver attempted to evade an angry mob seeking retribution.

While initial reports suggested that the accident had resulted in multiple fatalities, the Prisons authorities later contradicted these claims, asserting that no lives had been lost.

Tensions ran high as the infuriated crowd contemplated torching the vehicle and taking matters into their own hands. However, the situation took a different turn when the armed guards from the prison fired sporadic gunshots, scattering the mob.

A resident of the area, speaking anonymously, disclosed that the mob’s frustration led to an attack on the bus accompanying the inmates’ vehicle to court. Thankfully, the van transporting the inmates reached its destination without further incident, albeit amidst the chaos. This unsettling accident also prompted a protest by a group of local motorcycle riders, commonly known as “okada riders” in the Ilorin metropolis.

The Zonal Spokesperson of the Motorcycle Riders Association in the state, AbdulAkeem Sulaiman, spoke to the media about the incident. He urged the government to ensure justice for their members and highlighted that those who lost their lives were individuals striving to earn a livelihood to support their families.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident and reassured the public that order had been restored in the areas where the protest had taken place. Okasanmi stated, “We have not recorded any death” and emphasized that the police would take the necessary steps to ensure justice is served to those affected by the incident.

Additionally, the state NCoS (Nigerian Correctional Service) Public Relations Officer, Philip Adegbulugbe, alleged that the incident had roots in an attempt by suspected hoodlums to free high-profile inmates who were being conveyed to court in the area, creating pandemonium.

Despite the tumultuous events, the Correctional Service personnel managed to navigate their way to the court. Those who sustained injuries were swiftly transported to the hospital for medical attention and are reportedly responding well to treatment.
