Presidential Directive Issued for Badagry-Sokoto Expressway Design – Umahi

Works Minister Dave Umahi announced that President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate design of the Badagry-Sokoto Expressway. This development was shared following the minister’s inspection of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway’s realignment in Lagos.

The new expressway, part of the coastal highway network, will span approximately 1,000 kilometers and is set to begin from Sokoto, in the northern part of Nigeria. Speaking to reporters, Umahi explained that the project is designed to enhance connectivity and boost economic activities across multiple regions.

“We’ve started the design process, and I am confident that once the Federal Executive Council approves it, we will commence construction from the Sokoto side, which is the zero point,” the minister stated. He also mentioned a secondary spur road from Enugu to Abakaliki, extending to Ogoja and eventually to Cameroon, totaling about 361 kilometers.

Additionally, Umahi emphasized that the coastal road project would establish vital links among the Southwest, Southsouth, Northeast, Northwest, and Northcentral regions of Nigeria. This project is expected to significantly contribute to the economic growth and integration of these regions.

The Minister highlighted the broader implications of this project for the entire continent, suggesting that this road network could become a landmark achievement. “This will be a legacy we’ve never seen in Africa,” Umahi said, adding that the current administration’s courage is inspiring and driving these ambitious projects forward.

Regarding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Umahi announced the commencement of property demolition along the route’s right of way. The Minister assured affected property owners that they would be compensated swiftly, emphasizing the government’s commitment to minimizing disruptions during construction. The demolition, part of the 700-kilometer highway handled by Hitech Construction Company Ltd., is being conducted with a “human face,” according to the Minister.

“We are doing some minor adjustments, and our commitment is to stay within the coastline,” Umahi explained. He urged affected individuals to show understanding and patience, pointing out that this project ultimately serves the broader national interest.
