President Tinubu to Lead Commemoration Walk for 25 Years of Democracy in Abuja on May 29

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is set to lead a symbolic walk in Abuja on May 29 to mark 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in the country. This event is part of a series of activities organized by the National Democracy Stakeholders’ Group (NDSG) to celebrate this significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

The NDSG Chairman, Dr. Kletsaint Akor, announced that the walk, named the National Democracy Solidarity Walk, will also feature participation from Vice President Kashim Shettima and other key government officials. The walk will occur simultaneously in all 36 states and Abuja, demonstrating nationwide unity in commemorating the enduring principles of democracy.

In a statement released yesterday, Akor highlighted the symbolic importance of this walk, stating, “This symbolic walk will bring together citizens from all walks of life to celebrate the spirit of democracy and reflect on its enduring importance.” He noted that the week-long celebration, centered around the annual Democracy Day on June 12, would include various events aimed at promoting civic engagement and fostering dialogue around democratic ideals.

Top government officials expected to join the walk include Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Chief Justice of the Federation Olukayode Ariwoola, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas. The statement also mentioned that in the 36 states, the walk will be led by state governors, their deputies, and state chief judges.

The celebrations will culminate with the Nigeria Democracy Week, running from June 10 to 14, which will serve as a platform to honor Nigeria’s journey to democracy and reaffirm the nation’s commitment to democratic governance. Activities throughout the week will feature the launch of the NDSG Book Chain, a comprehensive research work outlining Nigeria’s governance culture from pre-colonial times to the present.

Dr. Akor concluded by extending congratulations to President Tinubu and the people of Nigeria, emphasizing that the success of Nigeria’s democracy is rooted in the collective commitment of its citizens, despite the challenges faced along the way. He stated, “We extend our heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and all Nigerians for their steadfast support of democracy and their tireless efforts in upholding its values.”

The Democracy Walk and the week-long celebration are expected to draw large crowds, symbolizing a unified front in the ongoing effort to strengthen and uphold Nigeria’s democratic principles.
