President Tinubu Proposes New Salaries and Allowances for Judicial Officers in Bill Sent to Senate
President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step towards enhancing the welfare of judicial officers in Nigeria by submitting a bill to the Senate aimed at restructuring their salaries and allowances.
During the Senate’s plenary session on Wednesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the receipt of a letter from President Tinubu, urging the Senate’s approval for the bill.
In the letter, President Tinubu emphasized the necessity of addressing the longstanding stagnation in the remuneration of judicial officers, highlighting the proposed bill as a means to achieve this objective and improve their overall welfare.
President Tinubu’s letter stated: “I forward herein, the judicial office holders, salaries and allowances bill, 2024, for the kind consideration of the senate. The judicial office holders salaries and allowances bill seeks to prescribe salaries and allowances and fringe benefits for judicial officials to end the prolonged stagnation in their remuneration and to reflect contemporary socio-economic realities.”
Acknowledging the constitutional procedure, Tinubu underscored the importance of a thorough yet prompt consideration and passage of the bill by the Senate.
This development follows the bill’s earlier introduction in the House of Representatives, where it successfully passed the third reading.
President Tinubu’s commitment to reviewing the remuneration of judicial officers was previously articulated in August 2023 during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) at the presidential villa.
