President Tinubu Moves to Block U.S. Agencies from Disclosing Confidential Files as October Deadline Nears
President Bola Tinubu finds himself entangled in a legal battle aimed at preventing United States agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), from disclosing confidential records. As the deadline of October’s end looms, court documents obtained by the Peoples Gazette shed light on Tinubu’s efforts to secure his private information.
According to the documents, lawyers representing President Tinubu in the United States have taken action to participate in an ongoing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against these U.S. organizations. The lawsuit seeks to unearth records that may shed light on the President’s true identity and his extensive history of activities.
Christopher Carmichael, one of the attorneys who previously represented Tinubu in a recent case involving Chicago records, filed a motion on October 18, 2023. This motion aims to allow him to participate in the FOIA lawsuit underway in Washington D.C. Carmichael’s declaration states that he is an active member in good standing, seeking to represent Tinubu’s interests.
The reasoning behind President Tinubu’s belief that he can block U.S. agencies from complying with federal disclosure regulations remains unclear. At this stage, Christopher Carmichael has not provided comments, and President Tinubu’s lead lawyer in the U.S., Oluwole Afolabi, declined to comment on the case until it officially begins. The legal team is working diligently to present their arguments before the October 31 deadline.
It was reported that the FBI intends to release these records to Aaron Greenspan, the owner of PlainSite, a website dedicated to promoting anti-corruption and transparency in public service. Additionally, various other U.S. institutions, such as the U.S. State Department, Internal Revenue Service, and Drug Enforcement Administration, have expressed readiness to provide thousands of pages of documents related to Bola Tinubu.
This move comes after President Tinubu’s recent loss in a legal battle to prevent the release of his academic records to his political rival, Atiku Abubakar, in Nigeria. The school eventually released records confirming Tinubu’s admission in 1977 but noted its inability to authenticate the certificate he used during the 2022 Nigerian election.
The situation remains fluid as these legal developments unfold, and further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
