Poverty is Not a Crime, It Could Be a Virtue of God – Senate President Godswill Akpabio Charges Nigerians

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has emphasized that poverty should not be viewed as a crime, suggesting instead that it can sometimes be seen as a virtue, particularly when seen through a spiritual lens. Speaking from Rome following the funeral of Pope Francis, Akpabio reflected on the Pope’s life, underscoring his message of humility and self-sacrifice.

Akpabio pointed out that the Catholic Church is not only a religious institution but also a sovereign state, with the Pope serving as its leader and guiding over 1.5 billion people globally. He highlighted that despite the immense influence and leadership the Pope held, his personal wealth amounted to only $100 at the time of his passing, showing that one can lead a life of significance without the need for material splendor.

The Senate President stressed that true worship of God is not found in opulence, but rather in self-sacrifice for the benefit of others. He called on Nigerians to embrace a spirit of love and unity, especially during the Easter season, and urged citizens to share what they have with those in need, reinforcing that poverty, far from being a crime, could indeed be a divine virtue.
