‘Poverty and Hardship Have Always Been Part of Nigeria,’ MURIC Opposes August 1 Protest

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued a caution against the proposed nationwide hunger protest, asserting that poverty and hardship have long been a part of Nigerian history. In a statement released on Tuesday, signed by Executive Director Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC emphasized that the challenges of inflation and hunger are global issues, not unique to Nigeria.

MURIC criticized the protest organizers, describing their planned demonstration as “an invitation to the mother of all hunger.” The group advised that instead of directing anger at the government, it would be more constructive to engage in dialogue, highlighting the potential consequences of violent protests.

The statement further noted that inflation is a worldwide phenomenon and that Nigeria’s struggles with poverty are not new. MURIC urged that it is both unfair and premature to attribute the nation’s economic difficulties solely to the current administration, which has been in power for less than a year.
