Popular Nollywood Actress Dies After Prolonged Illness
Nollywood actress and director Oby Kechere has died at the age of 53.
Her passing was confirmed on Saturday by Uche Agbo, the National President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN). According to the guild, Kechere died on April 27, 2026, after a prolonged illness.
In a statement, Agbo described her as a dedicated professional and a key figure within the Abuja chapter of the guild, where she served as Vice Chairman. He noted that her contributions to the organization and her role in strengthening its community would be remembered.
Kechere gained widespread recognition for her role as “Madam Koi Koi” in the 2002 comedy film Aki na Ukwa. The performance remains one of her most memorable appearances on screen.
A graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Ibadan, she began her career in Nollywood in 2001. She first appeared in the popular “August Meeting” film series before expanding into directing and production.
Originally from Mbaise in Imo State, Kechere built a career that spanned acting, directing, and industry leadership.
The DGN extended condolences to her family, colleagues, and members of the Abuja chapter.
