Popular Calabar Market gutted by fire
Popular Marian market in Calabar has been gutted by the fire. The fire started at about 8.30pm Wednesday.
Traders at the popular Marian market are counting their losses as fire gutted the second largest Market, Marian market, in Calabar, the Cross River State Capital.
Goods worth millions of naira were destroyed in the fire outbreak attributed to power surge.
Traders and passerby resulted to self help to prevent the fire from extending to other parts of the market as fire fighter were not on ground.
Security operatives led by the State Commissioner of Police, Abdulkadir Jimoh however were on ground to provide security and to forestall break down of law and order.
Eyewitnesses described the fire outbreak as one too many, saying it is the second time in less than two months that the market has been gutted by fire.
They called on the Government to rebuild the market and help them financially.
There were however no lives lost in the disaster. The food stuff section of the market was mostly affected.
