Police Suspend Enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit Policy Over Court Order

The Nigeria Police Force has suspended the enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy following a court order restraining its implementation.

The policy, which was scheduled to take effect nationwide on January 2, 2026, has now been put on hold pending the hearing and determination of a substantive suit or the vacation of the interim order. This was disclosed on Thursday by the force spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin.

In December 2025, the Delta State High Court granted an ex parte injunction preventing the police from commencing enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy across the country. The suit was filed by Israel Joe against the inspector-general of police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Delta State commissioner of police.

The court action intensified an ongoing dispute between the Nigerian Bar Association and the police over the policy. Earlier, on December 15, 2024, the police had announced plans to resume enforcement from January 2, 2026, citing an increase in vehicle-related crimes. The NBA condemned the announcement, accusing the police of disregarding a court order and describing the move as executive recklessness and a violation of the rule of law. In response, the police maintained that no court order had declared the policy unlawful or permanently barred its enforcement.

Hundeyin confirmed that the police had now been formally served with the interim injunction. He said the force has entered an appearance in the case, raised preliminary objections, and applied for the order to be vacated. The matter has been adjourned to January 20, 2026, for further proceedings.

According to the police spokesperson, the suspension of enforcement is in strict compliance with the existing court order. He added that the inspector-general of police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the force’s commitment to upholding the rule of law while carrying out its constitutional duty to protect lives and property.

Hundeyin said the police will continue to rely on lawful and intelligence-driven measures to address security challenges and ensure public safety across the country while the court process continues.
