Police React to Report of Emergence of New Terror Group in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Command has refuted claims circulating on social media about the alleged emergence of a terrorist group known as ‘Mahmuda’ in parts of the state. The group was reported to be active in Kaiama and Baruten Local Government Areas, as well as in neighboring Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

Social media posts had alleged that the group was responsible for attacks on communities including Kemaanji, Tenebo, Baabete, Nuku, and Nanu, all within Yashikira District, with reports of killings, kidnappings, and ransom demands. One report claimed that an attack on a vigilante unit in Kemanji had left over 15 people dead.

However, in a statement released by the police spokesperson, Aderoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the command categorically dismissed the reports as false. According to Ejire-Adeyemi, extensive intelligence gathering, threat assessments, and tactical operations have found no evidence of terrorist activity or mass casualties in any of the mentioned locations. She described the claim about the death of 15 vigilantes as completely baseless.

The police assured residents that security agencies remain fully alert and proactive, operating under a coordinated multi-agency framework. There has been no breach of internal security in the affected areas, the statement concluded.
