Police Officers Arrested for Abducting Hotel Staff, Demanding N1 Million Ransom in Rivers
Undisclosed police officers have been apprehended in Rivers State for kidnapping a hotel staff and demanding a hefty N1 million ransom for his release.
The victim, an employee of a local hotel, fell prey to the rogue officers on Friday evening at approximately 8 pm while en route to work in Port Harcourt.
Sources close to the Rivers Command revealed that the officers, unsatisfied after searching the victim and finding nothing incriminating, resorted to checking his phone. Upon discovering the victim’s workplace, they abducted him, coercing him to contact his family and demand a ransom for his freedom.
The officers, menacingly threatening harm, forced the young man to call his family, demanding one million naira for his release. They claimed they would resort to violence, citing past instances where uncooperative victims met dire consequences.
Reports indicate that the officers, patrolling with the captive, eventually transported him to a remote location in Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area, where they intended to collect the ransom.
In a surprising turn of events, the victim’s boss, alerted by the situation, cleverly contacted a certain DPO (names withheld), posing as the victim’s father and initiating a negotiation for the ransom.
Around 1 am on Saturday, the DPO, along with his team, intercepted the rogue officers at the designated location, disarming and arresting them. Astonishingly, they were identified as members of a police formation in Port Harcourt town, Borokiri axis.
The mother of the kidnapped victim confirmed the detention of the rogue officers by the DPO in the early hours of Saturday.
As of now, additional details are emerging, and the Rivers Police Command has yet to make an official statement regarding the incident. This abduction occurred within 24 hours of Commissioner of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu advising the public to document police activities on video.
